The New South Wales Government is offering households a $35 incentive to get rid of old fridges in a bid to reduce the state's carbon footprint.
Under the buyback scheme, fridges will be removed and recycled in the hope of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by more than 150,000 tonnes a year.
Fridges must be at least 10-years-old and 250 litres in size to qualify.
Environment Minister Verity Firth says the Government hopes to have 19,000 old fridges out of circulation within three years.
"The average household can save up to $190 a year from their electricity bills simply by getting rid of the second fridge," she said.
"They also save eight tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions a year, so we're providing them with an incentive."
